Here is a way for you to make a real difference in the lives of people here in Madison and around the globe – contribute to the research and education missions of the Department of Dermatology! You will help support the training of new dermatologists by contributing to our residency fund. You will help find cures and new treatments for skin diseases by contributing to one of the research endowments described below.

On-line donations are made through the secure website of our fundraising organization, the University of Wisconsin Foundation, at the links below assigned to each fund.  Contributions can also be mailed, printed forms and mailing information available HERE, mail it with your check payable to The University of Wisconsin Foundation, 1848 University Avenue, P.O. Sture Johson

The Geneva F. and Sture Johnson Professorship:

This endowment was a generous family gift honoring our first dermatology section chief, Sture Johnson, MD.  It supports leadership that enhances research, teaching, and clinical service in skin disease.  Department chair Gary S. Wood, MD, holds the Johnson Professorship.

The Evan P. and Marion Helfaer Professorship of Dermatological Cancer Research:

Supports the development of the department’s research missions. Hasan Mukhtar, PhD, vice chair of research, holds the Helfaer Professorship.

Derek J Cripps

Derek J Cripps Endowment for Skin and Cancer Research:

This fund was established in 2008 to honor the remarkable and varied 40 year career of Dr. Cripps. His r esearch in the effects of ultraviolet light on the skin was pioneering work that led to the development of the SPF system. A passionate educator, he trained scores of Dermatology residents many of whom remain the foundation of dermatology services in Wisconsin and beyond. This fund supports research into the causes, prevention and cures of skin diseases.  The endowment currently supports Vijayasaradhi Setaluri, PhD.

Frederic E. Mohs Endowment for Skin and Cancer Research:

Dr. Mohs developed the Micrographic Surgery technique at the University of Wisconsin in the mid – 1930s. During 50 years of clinical practice at UW and through dedication and perseverance in the face of daunting obstacles, he pioneered what is now the standard of care for skin cancer. This fund will continue the legendary research begun by Dr. Mohs to prevent, and cure skin and other cancers and skin diseases. The endowment currently supports B. Jack Longley, MD.

Nelson M. Hagan, Class of 1929 Endowment:

This endowment—the most generous contribution to date in the department’s history—was created and funded in 2010 through a bequest by Marjorie Hagan. The endowment currently supports research by Hagan Professors Nihal Ahmad, PhD, and Hao Chang, PhD.

 Residents in Clinic

Dermatology Resident Program Support Fund:

The purpose of this fund is to provide opportunities in the Dermatology and Dermatology/Medicine Residency program that are otherwise unfunded. Events such as an annual retreat, attendance at a national dermatopathology program, or other regional programs that enhance the learning experience for residents are some examples. Contributions to this fund have an immediate impact on the educational mission of the department and the learning experience of the residents.
