Research Summary
The long-term goal of Ahmad laboratory is to be able to make an impact on the quality of human life through cutting-edge biomedical research. To achieve this goal, we want to define the critical molecular and biochemical events in the process of cancer development that will help us identify the targets for disease management. Using this knowledge, we want to be able to develop new approaches and strategies, which could ultimately be translated from the bench to the bedside, for the prevention and/or treatment of cancer. Thus, our research is focused on two broad and complimentary research areas; 1) cancer biology, and 2) prevention and experimental therapeutics of cancer.

Research Summary
Developmental Genetics of Planar Cell Polarity in Mammalian Skin

Research in my lab focuses on understanding the developmental mechanisms that pattern cells in tissue planes and body axes, a phenomenon known as planar cell polarity (PCP). Mutations in PCP genes have been found to cause many diseases in human patients and/or in mouse models, such as neural tube closure defects, polycystic kidney disease, axon guidance defects and cleft palate. Using mouse skin as a model system, we are interested in dissecting the mechanisms of mammalian PCP and helping us better understand the development of PCP-related diseases.

Dermatology Research Laboratories

Research Summary
The Schieke lab studies molecular mechanisms and pathways regulating the functional diversity of cells in tumors and normal tissues. Our research focus areas are phenotypic and functional heterogeneity, metabolic requirements of cell proliferation, and mitochondrial signaling. Understanding the functionally diverse cell states and their impact on disease development and progression will ultimately help to define novel drug targets and molecular therapeutics.
