The Department of Dermatology at the University of Wisconsin is committed to providing a diverse, equitable, inclusive and anti-racist learning environment and workplace. The Underrepresented in Medicine (URiM) Visiting Student Scholarship Program sponsored by the Department of Dermatology supports qualified fourth-year medical students from underrepresented backgrounds in medicine to develop their clinical skills and career through a visiting rotation, mentorship, and networking opportunities.
Program Information
FINANCIAL AWARD
Students who are chosen will be awarded $3,000 to offset costs for travel, housing and food during the 4 week rotation in Madison, Wisconsin.
PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY
To be eligible for the Dermatology URiM Visiting Student Scholarship, prospective students must meet one or more of the criteria below:
- High level of financial need
- First generation college student (neither parent received a baccalaureate degree)
- Students who contribute to the intellectual and cultural enrichment of the program because of their life experiences, including overcoming personal adversity or family hardship, records of extensive community service, or successful careers in other fields
- Significant barriers to achieving higher education, such as experience in the foster care system, living in a single-parent household, having an incarcerated parent, or responsibilities for providing financial support or primary care for other household members.
In addition, all prospective students must also meet ALL criteria outlined below:
- Plan on applying to Dermatology for residency
- Enrolled in an LCME or AOA accredited medical school
- U.S. Citizen, permanent resident, or have official refugee, asylee or DACA status
- In their final year of training during which their away rotation will take place

DERMATOLOGY URiM APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
- Letter of recommendation from a clinician of your choosing who can speak to your character, background, and passion for the field of dermatology.
- Current CV
- Personal statement
- Supplemental Essays
- What does inclusion, diversity, equity, and access in dermatology mean to you? (500 word maximum)
- Why are you interested in a career in dermatology? Are there specific areas of dermatology that interest you? What are your career goals? (1000 word Maximum)
- How would rotating at Wisconsin help you achieve your goals? (500 word maximum)
